Earth :
The planet which we inhabit is called Planet Earth. We have one moon and one sun, which gives us heat and light energy. There are other planets in our ‘solar system’. Do you know any of them?
Ecologist:
Name given to the type of scientist who studies organisms (forms of life) and their environment.
Ecology:
The study of living things in their environment and how the interact with each other.
Ecosystem :
The living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) parts of the environment. The ecosystem includes plant and animal communities along with factors such as climate, altitude, temperature, moisture, light, and the chemical cycles.
Endangered:
These are animals and plants that are in danger of becoming extinct very soon, such as the Tiger, the Koala Bear,Pandas, Dormouse and even the British Hedgehog are all endangered species.There are many others endangered species around the world. Many animals and plants are becoming ‘extinct’ because of mankind and the destruction of their environment, their natural habitat. We must work together to make the world a safer place for us all.
Environment:
The natural living area of an organism (any living thing), including everything in that area, living and nonliving, that affects it.
Equator:
The imaginary boundary that divides the World in half horizontally between north and south.
Evaporate:
When a liquid is heated you can see tiny droplets of ‘steam’ coming off the top. This is evaporation.
Evergreen:
A plant whose needles or leaves remain green throughout the year and do not always fall off each autumn.
Extinction:
The dying out of a type of animal or plant (‘species’) so that it ceases to exist in the whole world - the complete disappearance of a species from the earth, forever. One example is the Dodo Bird. Can you think of a large group of animals that existed many thousands of years ago, which do not walk around any more?
